Learn From Celebrities: Which Hair Cut Is Best For My Face Shape?

When it comes to choosing a haircut, there can be a lot of factors that need to be taken into consideration, given that we are all unique individuals with different face shapes, not all haircuts will look good on every face. Think of it like clothing, there are multiple different body types, and what is flattering on one body may not be the most flattering on another. This may seem obvious, but it is important to cater to your features to create the illusion of greater symmetry or balance of the face when selecting a haircut that will best suit your face.

  1. Round Face Shape

The first face shape we are going to cover is the round face shape. Round faces often have soft edges, such as the jaw and have higher and/or wider cheekbones, giving the face a full look. The best haircut for the round face would be one that balances out its proportions is shorter on the sides and has more volume on the top. The best haircut to avoid with this face shape is a buzzcut, as it does not add any balancing elements of style to the face or its structure. Zack Galifianakis, the famous American comedian and actor is known to have a round face shape, and sport a full beard at times.

Leo Dicaprio is a famous actor with a round face shape, often sporting a side part and some light facial hair to add framing to the face.

2. Square Face Shape

A square face shape is similar to a round face shape in the sense that a majority of your face has the same dimensions. Each side has the same general measurements with an emphasis on the corners. The most defining feature of people with a square face shape is often the jawline. This type of face shape is adaptable to multiple different hairstyles, meaning you have a lot of range when choosing a haircut, including an undercut to emphasize the jaw and add lots of volume up top to create balance with the square jaw shape. Rob Lowe is a famous American actor and producer with a square jaw who sports comb over hairstyles.

3. Heart Face Shape

The proportions of a heart-shaped face are similar to that of a heart, the forehead and cheeks tend to be fuller than the lower half of the face, like the jaw. This results in the appearance of a more pointed chin and a difference in the ratio of the top of the face to the bottom of the face. A heart is broader up top and smiler towards the end with a point at the bottom. The best haircut for this face shape is one that is longer and softer, like a layered quiff, or mid-length textured side-swept part. The famous American singer and songwriter Justin Timberlake has a heart face shape and often chooses to rock a comb-over, a popular style among men. An oval face shape naturally has even proportions, without sharp angles, and can get away with a multitude of different hairstyles. This face shape is longer than it is wide and can pull off longer hairstyles, voluminous pompadours, sophisticated quiffs, stylish fades, and basically pretty much everything. Fades and undercuts also look good on this face shape, however it is advised to avoid fringe/bangs as they can make the face appear wider if the forehead is covered. Jake Gyllenhaal the famous American actor often rocks facial hair and has an oval face shape.

5. Oblong Face

Unlike an oval face shape, an oblong face appears a bit longer, as the dimensions of the length vs the width are a bit more prevalent. With this face shape you have higher cheekbones and an elongated forehead, they are longer than they are wide. Men with oblong faces are advised to try haircuts such as crewcuts and buzzcuts to keep it short on top. If you really want volume on top skip the fade and go for a comb-over or side part. The lead singer of Maroon 5, Adam Levine, is known for having an oblong face shape.

6. Diamond Face Shape

The diamond face shape has wide cheekbones and a narrow forehead, the face is narrow and thin leading to a pointed chin. The cheekbones are the widest point of the face and the forehead and jaw are slimmer than the cheekbones, creating a diamond shape. For this face shape a style that is textured, a little angular and messy, such as a side part, will help balance out the proportions of the cheekbones with those of the forehead to create a more balanced look.
